09 Feb Bye-Bye Biden, Redux
I’ll be brief today, in part because I’m feeling a bit under the weather, and in part because what I have to say is slowly but surely moving from the fringes to the mainstream. Anyway, 13 months ago, I wrote the following:
The powers that be in the Democratic Party want Joe Biden out. They may, possibly, be willing to tolerate him for the remainder of this term, but there is no way they will allow him to be the nominee in 2024. They have decided to move on, whether Sleepy Joe knows it or not and whether he agrees to it or not….
As we have noted before, we have no idea who the real power brokers in the Democratic Party are. We have no idea who is pulling the strings in the Biden administration or who is pulling the strings in the effort to undermine the Biden administration. All we know is that they don’t want this circus going on past January 20, 2025.
Given yesterday’s news and yesterday’s news conference, I thought now would be as good a time as any to reiterate that call (as crazy as it might sound): Joe Biden will NOT be the Democratic presidential nominee this year.
For those of you who may not know, when I say “yesterday’s news,” I mean this:
Joe Biden carelessly kept classified documents and notebooks at his home, according to a special counsel report released Thursday that said the evidence wasn’t strong enough to charge the president with crimes….
The 345-page special counsel report portrays Biden, 81, as someone who haphazardly kept notebooks and documents with classified information at his home, and struggled to recall key dates in his life….
Special counsel Robert K. Hur’s report also said Biden could not remember the year in which his son Beau died of cancer….
Ultimately, the report said a jury would find Biden to be a sympathetic figure and “a well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”
And when I say “yesterday’s news conference,” I mean this:
For years now, President Biden‘s advisers have carefully choreographed his every move to avoid what exploded into view over six hours Thursday: a vivid display of an elderly, irritable man struggling on a public stage….
Biden insisted “my memory is fine,” blamed his staff for the mishandling of classified documents in his home — and referred to President el-Sisi of Egypt as the president of Mexico when talking about the war in Gaza….
Thursday’s stunning events — Hur’s description of Biden in the report, then Biden’s shaky press conference — alarmed many senior Democrats, including former aides to Biden….
One House Democrat called Biden’s verbal slip-ups “awful,” and wondered why the president’s staff allowed him to hold a press conference….
Another former Biden White House official simply said: “Brutal.”
It’s kinda funny. That Democratic Congressman wondered why his staff let him hold a press conference. Bill Ackman thought he had an answer for that: “I am sure his staff told him not to respond to the report. He didn’t listen and called an emergency press conference.” I can’t help but think they’re both missing the point. I don’t want to get into the deep weeds of conspiracy theories, but there is, I think, a reasonable possibility that they let him do the press conference specifically because they knew it would be a disaster. They knew he would reinforce the very impression he intended to dispel. And they knew it had to be done.
Whatever the case, the press and other erstwhile Biden supporters got the message: time to put the ol’ boy out of our misery. Before the end of the evening, the New York Times had five stories up on its website – the top 5 stories – about Biden’s memory issues. By early this morning, even the most vocal and notorious of all Trump haters was expressing his belief that the damage had been done and that it was time to panic:
Gotta think that at 3:00 am today in the DC area there was a spike of Google search activity (on people’s personal accounts, not their WH or congressional ones!) around Qs like “if primary filing deadlines have passed, how do write-in candidates work?”, “open conventions,” etc….
…yes, I admit it–one of those Googlers was me…
Former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy took to Twitter/X last night to expand on comments he made earlier on Fox News, writing “Get Ready for Michelle Obama.” Mrs. Obama makes sense as a replacement candidate. She, like Biden, can be manipulated by her husband. She is exceptionally well-liked in non-Republican circles. She short-circuits the worry about the racial impact of skipping over the eminently unqualified Vice President. All of which is to say that Vivek may well be right.
Or he may not be. Time will tell. Regardless, if you happen to be one of the four or five people in the country who was excited to vote for Joe Biden this November, you should start making your peace with the idea that you won’t get that opportunity. It’s not gonna happen.
